Las Vegas ACOA Incest Survivor's Meeting's Guidelines for Safety

1. There is no phone list for this meeting. Any member may feel free to ask another member for their phone number. However, realize that you are free to not give out your phone number and not justify your decision.

2. For many of us, touch is a loaded subject. Be very aware of your physical space and the physical space of others. Respect yourself and each other and do not invade boundaries. Do not assume your touch is wanted.

3. If you are in pain and want or need some comforting, you are free to ask for it. A simple "help" will suffice.

4. Once asked for help, anyone who feels comfortable giving comfort may do so. That can and does include gently touching a shoulder, holding a hand, putting an arm around another or giving a hug.

5. If someone's touch is felt as unwanted, invasive or in any way inappropriate, you have the right to reject it, even if you just asked for help.

6. Anyone asked for help has the right to refuse to give it. It takes two to touch, and you may not be in a place where you can help another without hurting yourself.

7. We all have the right to reject any physical touch at any time.

Remember, playing caretaker is a method of control, which is part of the disease of incest. We are learning to get away from controlling and being controlled. We are here to feel the pain, express it, and learn from it. Please respect the process of everyone in this room.

Finally, we reinforce the principles that this group is anonymous. The information shared in this meeting is not for gossip, comment, judgement, or repeating. Safety for one is safety for all; when in doubt, say nothing. And if you should meet someone else from the group in an outside situation and are asked how you know each other, two phrases to consider are, "We met through friends" and "None of your business."
